The selection to the company is of 2 stages . 1. Group discussion 2.Personal interview
A topic , generally a most common one like "Role of Engineers in development of India" is given and students have
to discuss about the same for about ten minutes. During GD,stress is more laid on the quality of points that you
come up with and not just blah blah .. you speak of.Mostly no elimination will be done from GD.If at all any
elimination,its just if dont even open your mouth.
The score of GD along with the score in interviews is used for final selection of candidates . So I suggest to take
each and every part of the selection process serious.

The technical interview of NLC is the most toughest interview I had ever attended in my life.Interviewer was
expecting a lot from NITians . The questions were all practical industry defined & application oriented and no mug
up from text books/notes works out there.Mostly you will be given a chance to tell your favorite subject , for which
I answered POWER SYSTEMS. But since almost every one chose the same, interview asked me to choose any other
subjects.I said I am comfortable with CONTROL SYSTEMS, POWER SYSTEM PROTECTION , POWER SYSTEM
OPERATION & CONTROL, HVDC & FACTS , DISTRIBUTION SYSTEMS ,POWER QUALITY except ELECTRICAL
MACHINES as I am zero in that:)
These are the sample of questions that i ve faced :
1. A generator of given rating (MW,MVA ) is given. Due to some sudden change in the loads the frequency of the
system dips down.Design a Automatic generation control(AGC) for the system and explain what inputs to AGC are
necessary to bring back system V & F to normal values . Also explain where these inputs have to be given ?
I could answer the question partially . delta Pc , delta W inputs , reference values were the required inputs.Then I
tried to explain the AGC & load frequency control model & its operation .
2. What all kind of batteries do you know about ? How do you design a battery for a power plant ? what are d
various design criteria for sizing of battery & UPS in power plants ? what kind of batteries are used in Power plants ?
what are the leading battery production companies ?
VRLA (valve regulated lead acid) batteries,NI Cd cells etc. In power plants VRLA batteries are used. some
companies like EXIDE etc.( I just know EXIDE :)
3. Some questions were based on the projects that you do . I did projects on "power plant electrical equipment
design" & "power quality" . So he asked me some question like : What is design criteria of cables ? What are
general CERC ( central electricity regulation commission) set norms for power quality ? What are the reasons for
poor quality of supply in INDIA.
4.What kind of batteries are used in automobiles ? How are these different from those in power station ? ( I could
not answer this )
5.Also there were general questions like "what is the current installed capacity in India ? how much deficit we are
facing ? "

There were not many HR questions except a few about the details of your family & your education details.Also the
interviewer asked me why am I not placed till then (feb),how many interviews have I attended. I answered that I
just apply only to companies of my interest (core power sector companies).

I suggest apart from B.Tech classroom syllabus, you people must also be well versed with practical knowledge and
have a fair idea of standards followed in industries.

Over all, It was a nice experience. I could know myself that I know something extra in core subjects apart from
class notes stuff.The company has a very good profile and a good place to work.Even the pay & benefits are
awesome.
