Try to attempt as many questions as you can, with maximum accuracy. I also ranked within the top 1 % in GATE, so that preparation took care of the technical part. Aptitude section is relatively easy. So try to score well in that section.

Good CGPA ,communication skills, being student member of ASME,ISHRAE while in college, confidence worked in my favour.

As BHEL does not come to my college,I had to sit in the off campus examination ( which was conducted in my college by the way !). During my time there were 400 vacancies in Mechanical category.I am a general category candidate.
