Pattern of Written Test

Aptitude Test : 10 Minutes
Quantitative : 10 Minutes
Reasoning / Analytical : 10 Minutes
Verbal English : 10 Minutes
Technical : 30 Minutes
Details of types of questions asked in each of the sections:
The test was online. All questions were multiple choice questions. Each Non technical question had 40 seconds and
technical ones had 60 seconds to answer. There were totally 72 questions. quantitative questions were good and
answerable but it consumed a lot of time and many questions got skipped because of time constraint. Verbal and
analytical were reasonable!! As time passed the test became more of a guessing game.. Here my intuition helped
me.
Technical one was more of production (fits and tolerances, manufacturing technology, management science..etc)
and a little bit of thermal and design for me. everyone got different questions..some got more on thermal and fluid
mechanics whereas others got more on design..
Type of Questions : Go gauges and NO Go gauges, types of fits and there usage, XYZ, ABC analysis (quality
control!!),failure theories and for what kind of materials they are used (brittle or ductile), iron carbide diagram
(eutectic, eutectoid, martensite, tempering, normalizing, and other related ones), axial compressors, power plant
technology (rankine and its modifications such as effect of addition of heat exchanger or inter cooler, nuclear
reactors), ic engines (air standard cycles)
All questions were fundamental and its applications

Pattern of Group Discussion

Name of the Topic / Task : Industrial
Time Given : 20 Minutes
Details of the process and your contribution:
Nine students were made to sit facing each other. The panel themselves sat at corner of the room and gave 2-5
minutes for thinking on the topic. Then the GD started with pro industries note and within few minutes there was a
majority of people for industrial development with only three for poor upliftment. I started off for poor upliftment
and finding that the majority went for industrial development, tried to balance my views by interconnecting
industrial development and poor upliftment. I preferred the GD to converge to one conclusion and hence I played as
a coordinator in the GD, asking for views on the topic from those who sat silently and diverted the views from poor
upliftment to industrial development. So here I was mainly striking a balance and acted like a coordinator for a
better GD.
But on a whole it was not a good GD even though it converged to a single opinion. Some had good points but could
not put it in a right manner, some were beating around the bush and some sat silently. It was a nice experience!!

Technical Interview

Before the interview they asked us to fill a form which was similar to our biodata form/resume. It played a major
role. Interview started of with my interests and then to topics related to my project.. fluid dynamics, mathematics,
design, vibrations, workshop technology, thermodynamics, power plant technology (also on nuclear reactors), ic
engines, suspension and steering design.
Topics on which Questions were asked : Bernouli's theorem , Pascal's law, aerodynamics (basic boundary layer
theory, circulation theory, flaps and slats, applications of these in formula cars and aircrafts), vibration basics,
vibration measuring instruments (concepts behind vibrometers, accelerometers), mathematics involved in
vibrations, control systems (laplace transforms), Turbomachinery (basics of turbojet engines and its working,
difference between rocket fuel and turbo jet fuel, use of heat exchangers and intercoolers), boilers, difference
between steam power plant and nuclear power plant, nuclear power plant details (fuel, working fluid, coolant),
Lathes (whether key can be made in a shaft using lathe?), milling, Diesel and petrol engines, CRDI, types of steering
mechanisms, suspension systems.
Most of the questions were answerable as I found it as basics and some applications type questions. I didn know
much of IC engines and was frank enough to say it (they advised me to go through it!!), thus diverting their
questions.

HR Interview

It started with common question twisted as "Tell me about yourself and your family". Then after my technical
interview the panel asked HR questions based on my resume (TATA MOTORS resume format given before
interview).
Some of the questions: My schooling, my hobbies (I was asked about my favorite singers, different ragas, my
painting methods, my favorite novels and authors). My way of life, whether i am a theist or an atheist, whether i
worship or not and other general things.

Suggestion

Be fast to clear quant and good in technical (it also depends on your luck a bit!) to clear online test. Be commanding
when it comes to GD. Listen to the discussion and put points related to the topic. Let others speak, it will fetch u
points for making it a good discussion.
Be yourself when it comes to interview. When you are asked to tell about yourself tell them what is not there in your
resume. Having knowledge of basics of all subjects (at least mechanical!) is important. Be strong in your interests,
whatever it might be.
Keep in mind that you came here for knowledge, placement is just a fruit of it.

No. of Candidate applied And Points that Worked in Favour

Around 40 students wrote the online test out of which 9 were selected for GD. 5 students were selected for
interview. Clearing online test is important. One must be quick enough in quantitative, good in basics (Technical)
and ya luck does matter when it comes to questions one get. There was no separate technical and HR interview, it
was a single interview. The panel members tried to get answers from me when I had a doubt. It was a good 1 hr
experience!!
